Formidable Vegetable What-Now?

Turn music into compost? Why would anyone want to do that?!

I'm Charlie Mgee and for the past six years, I've been writing and performing funky, quirky songs and dance music based around principles of Permaculture (a system of ecologically sustainable design that has become a global movement of positive action) with my band, Formidable Vegetable Sound System.

'EARTH PEOPLE FAIR' is the working title for a new album we want to release, based around the three ethics of Permaculture: Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. This is where the compost begins..

Compost builds fertile soil to grow food.

Crowdfunding this album will grow fertile music to inspire change!

Our first album, Permaculture: A Rhymer's Manual was a triumphant success, taking us around the world to play at some of the biggest festivals on the planet (like Glastonbury, Shambhala & Woodford). Our second album, Grow Do It got picked up by the United Nations (no kidding - check it out) for a track called 'You Are What You Eat' and was a hit with kids and adults alike.

NOW, we'd love to do something different. In the spirit of Formidable Veg's first release back in 2013, the album we want to make (our third studio album) will be inspired by permaculture's three ethics and this thyme we also want to bring more of a yield back to the soil - starting with our first ever small-scale permaculture music festival being held on Charlie's family land in southwest Western Australia this November (nab yourself an invite in the rewards)!

Embedded in the ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share is the often overlooked ethic of self-care (or 'spirit care'), which features strongly in many of the new songs. Music itself is a way for us to tap into our emotions and change our perspective, but equally important is healthy food, a sense of community belonging, love and the healing of old wounds (both personal and cultural). One way we will be prioritising all of these things, is by funnelling surplus generated by this album into building soil fertility, planting food trees and implementing on-the-ground permaculture systems both at home and on-tour.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Alrighty... let's start the compost heap:  Pile it up, Break it down and Spread it round.

Your generously donated compost-ingredients will go towards the recording, mixing & mastering of our new songs, including some exciting collaborations - (including Hugo The Poet of Juice Rap News fame as well as Grammy Award winning hip-hop legend, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo!)

So here's how this whole musical composting thang works:

1. PILE IT UP

How much we pile depends on you and how many friends you can share this with!

2. BREAK IT DOWN

Here's the breakdown of the break-down...

• Recording/Production: $2000

• Mixing: $6000

(initial target reached! yay!)

...but that's the bare minimum we NEED to make this potent brew happen. After that. we’ll increase the target so that we can expand into things like:

• Beautiful hand-drawn artwork by permaculture illustrator Brenna Quinlan

• Music video production (at least $2000)

• Proper publicity campaign to launch it out into the World (at least $4000)

...and if we raise OnE MiLLiOn DoLLArS... (or even slightly less):

• You're all invited to a full-blown permaculture action launch-festival with The Vegetable Orchestra and Landfill Harmonic as backing bands where we'll plant as many food trees as humanly possible on seven-acres to create a food-forest of epic propotions! Lettuce TurnipCharge the ecological revolution with Rad(ish) Beets!!

3. SPREAD IT ROUND

Speaking of seven acres... this is the size of the piece of land in south-west WA where the dream of establishing said-permaculture festival begins - with the intention to inoculate the community and propogate the ethics of Earth People Fair.

You've made your pledge - now this is the part where I pledge to start growing this focused, on-the-ground change by directing all surplus income from the sales of the album toward the purchase of trees, seeds, composting & food-growing infrastructure in order to create an integrated permaculture demonstration/education/festival site that can be enjoyed by people from near and far who are passionate about living positive-impact lives and celebrating the change they want to see long into future.

This is the bigger-picture vision Formidable Vegetable Sound System has held for some time and I feel we're well overdue trying to make it a reality for the benefit of the permaculture movement as well as to our own lives.

It all starts with you and how much you believe in this project!

The Challenges

This is about way more than just an album.

The biggest challenge of being a touring band that sings about permaculture is balancing the time spent touring, recording and getting messages out there with time spent amongst friends & family on the land, getting soil under our fingernails and growing things. By dedicating every bit of surplus from this album to creating tangible, on-the-ground permaculture systems, planting fruit & nut trees and trying to establish regenerative habitat, I'm holding myself accountable to being the change I want to see and getting my hands dirty more often (and hence writing more songs as a result of the inspiration that inevitably comes from doing that stuff!)

Growing a permaculture festival at the same time is an extra challenge, but ultimately viable due to the incredible community of change-makers in the local area who support the idea. It'll be small and slow solutions at first - requiring a lot of community support, collaboration with friends, family and salvaging what we can to make a start- but hopefully we can keep growing this movement in a very real sense... locally as well as globally. Who's keen?
